Wayne Gretzky came into the season with an aluminum stick and orders from his coach to shoot more and pass less.

“Last year, he didn’t shoot enough,” Kings Coach Tom Webster said, reflecting on Gretzky’s 40-goal season that tied a career low.

Gretzky, armed with a quicker and harder shot, is listening.

He already has 25 goals, including three in Thursday night’s 6-3 victory over the New York Islanders that boosted his career total to 702. (Story, C1.)

Gretzky, who already owns most of the NHL’s offensive records, became only the fourth player in history to reach the 700-goal plateau. The others are Gordie Howe (801), Marcel Dionne (731) and Phil Esposito (717).

In 1981-82, Gretzky set the NHL record for goals in a season with 92 while with the Edmonton Oilers.

But in later years, he has concentrated more on setting up teammates.

“We thought it was a waste of talent,” Webster said. “Heck, with Wayne’s skills, he should be concentrating on scoring goals. I think he’s determined to get more shots on goal this year.”

Thursday night was a good example. Gretzky had five on net, including two in each of the first two periods.

“He sees the ice like no one else and he’s got superhuman anticipation,” Islanders defenseman Ken Baumgartner said. “He’s playing inspired hockey. He’s out there with a purpose.”

Added Islanders goalie Glenn Healy, who gave up Gretzky’s historic goal:

“He’s the best that’s played this game. He’s the guy that motivates their club, and (opponents) can’t make a mistake with him on the ice.”
