ANAHEIM : City Trash Cans Aid Residential Cleanup

Share

Hoping to rid a densely populated neighborhood of the cans, bottles and junk food wrappers that litter its streets, the city Sanitation Department has joined with residents and landlords in a campaign to keep the place clean.

The effort includes 11 strategically placed trash cans in the apartment-packed neighborhood behind Haster Street and Orangewood Avenue.

The plan to set city trash cans on the parkways in the neighborhood came after landlords and residents complained about the litter.

Landlords and residents said they would take responsibility for changing the liners in the cans if the city would pay to have the cans installed in key spots.

“It’s a trial program. If it’s successful, then maybe other responsible landlords will want to go in that direction,” said Rod Hallock, city sanitation superintendent.

It cost the city $3,500 to install the trash cans and concrete platforms for them.

The city operates trash bin programs in some neighborhoods that have problems with the dumping of bulky items such as couches, car parts and appliances.
