SANTA ANITA : Countus In, Little Brianne Top Field
Countus In, the upset winner of Hollywood Park’s Matriarch, and Little Brianne head a field of 10 horses entered for Sunday’s $132,600 San Gorgonio Handicap at 1 1/8 miles on the turf at Santa Anita.
With the weather predicted to clear today, the Grade II stake should stay on the grass, but in the event of more rain, a decision will be made late Sunday morning.
In the Matriarch, Countus In beat Taffeta and Tulle by a neck, with Little Brianne a head farther back in third place. A 5-year-old Dancing Count mare, Countus In will be ridden by Corey Nakatani.
Julio Garcia will have his usual seat atop Little Brianne.
The rest of the field: Agirlfromars, Marsha’s Dancer, Songlines, Sweet Roberta, Royal Touch, Oeilladine, Petalia and Tessla.
Undefeated in four sprint starts at Santa Anita, Stormy But Valid will go for No. 5 today in the $100,000 Las Flores Breeders’ Cup Handicap.
Winner of nine of 21 races for trainer Brian Mayberry and owners Jan, Mace and Samantha Siegel, the 5-year-old Valid Appeal mare will be ridden by Gary Stevens in the six-furlong race.
Others scheduled to go are Devil’s Orchid, Hasty Pasty, Classic Value, Wakia, Covell and Inverness Lady.
Horse Racing Notes
Jockey Christine Davenport broke her pelvis Thursday and will be sidelined for four to six months, according to Derek Lawson, her agent. She was injured when Order, who broke through the gate and was scratched before the seventh race, flipped, pinning Davenport.
