Vista 88, Rancho Buena Vista 87--Vista hit 24 two-point field goals--the most in a game during Greg Lanthier’s two years as head coach--to upset No. 5 RBV (6-7, 0-1). The Panthers got 23 points from Chris Johnson and 18 from Jason Barnes. Dave Enger scored 15 and George Ashley 10 for Vista.

“I felt if we could hold them under 90 points, we could win,” Lanthier said. “They didn’t press us, which surprised me, so we had to execute our halfcourt offense.”

The difference was the third quarter, when Vista (5-6, 2-0) outscored RBV, 21-20; the teams scored the same number of points in each of the other three quarters. The Panthers were 16 of 23 from the free-throw line, RBV 13 of 23.
