Jim Long, general manager of the radio station that broadcasts Detroit Tiger games, said that he, not team President Bo Schembechler, decided to fire Tiger broadcaster Ernie Harwell, according to a story in the Detroit News. Long said he wanted to fire Harwell after the 1990 season, but Schembechler insisted Harwell be allowed to return for a 32nd season. The decision to fire Harwell angered Tiger fans, many of whom blamed Schembechler.
