Trojans, Fresno State Capture UC Irvine Swimming Titles

USC’s Erik Gockstein won two events at the UC Irvine swimming invitational Sunday at Heritage Park, helping the Trojans capture the men’s team championship.

Gockstein won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 15 minutes 45.48 seconds and the 200 butterfly (1:54.77). The USC men’s team amassed 734 points in the two-day meet. Cal State Long Beach (683) was second and UC Irvine (447) third.

Katie Rowe and Lynnette Kosmala of Cal State Long Beach each won two events and the 49ers’ women’s team finished with 669 points, second to Fresno State (764). Rowe, who won the 200 and 400 individual medley races Saturday, won the 100 freestyle (54.51) and the 200 backstroke (2:14.50) and Kosmala won the 1,650 freestyle (17:36.59) and 200 butterfly (2:13.17).

Lisa Williams (1,650 free, 17:37.12) and Liz Koch (200 back, 2:17.40) each finished in second place for the Anteaters’ women’s team, which was sixth with 220 points.

Jeff Klatt finished second in the 200 butterfly (1:55.99) for the Irvine men.

Former UC Irvine All-American Brian Pajer, swimming for the Curl Swim Club, won the 200 breaststroke in 2:07.91.
