Share

A 42-year-old Ventura convenience store clerk was beaten with a bat until his arm was broken Monday by armed robbers who escaped with his cash register and two 12-packs of beer, police said.

Clerk Ted Gordon was working at the Stop N Go, 1001 Petit Ave., when three robbers entered wearing ski masks, Ventura Police Desk Officer Laurie James said. One of the males, who appeared to be between 12 and 16 years old, carried a baseball bat, police said. Another held a small-caliber revolver and a knife, police said.

The robbers demanded money from the register. When Gordon was unable to open it, he was hit with the bat, James said. The robbers then fled with the cash register and beer.

Ventura police, who did not have a canine unit on patrol, called for assistance from an Oxnard Police Department canine unit. Officers from the two departments recovered the beer and the cash register nearby. The robbers had taken $40 from the register.

The robbers were not caught, and the investigation is continuing, police said.
