The Ottawa Senators, one of the NHL’s two newest expansion teams, will ask the league to allow them to make their debut in October, a year earlier than scheduled, possibly taking the place of the San Jose Sharks, a published report said today.

The Ottawa Sun said it learned from an NHL source that the Senators will make a formal request next Monday when team representatives will be in New York to deliver a $5-million down payment on a $50-million franchise fee.

The Sharks were slated to start next season, but season ticket sales have been slow, the Sun said.

The Senators have sold out the 10,600-seat Ottawa Civic Centre, their home until a 22,500-seat Palladium is built.
