The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors awarded $10,000 Tuesday to John Vogel for information that led to the identification and ultimate murder conviction of Roland Norman Comtois.

Comtois was found guilty in June of the first-degree murder of Wendy Masuhara, 14, and the rape and attempted murder of her 13-year-old friend on Sept. 18, 1987.

The girls were walking in their Chatsworth neighborhood when they were abducted by Comtois and his female companion, Marcia Ramos.

Although Vogel did not actually witness the crime, he called police on Sept. 21 and again on Sept. 22, when he saw a man and a motor home that fit descriptions in news reports. After Vogel’s tip, police arrested Comtois.

Vogel requested county authorities not to divulge details of his identity.

Comtois was found guilty and sentenced to death.
