“Dick Tracy” climbed to No. 4 on the Billboard magazine rental chart in two weeks--up from No. 17. But, for this ballyhooed movie, that’s OK but not great. The competition from new releases hasn’t been that strong. No other title of this caliber has been released since November. There’s certainly been no shortage of rental copies in the stores, since Disney shipped 479,000 copies (a record for a title in $90 range) to video outlets. “RoboCop 2,” trashed by critics, didn’t do nearly as well as the original at the box office and the sequel, which stalled at No. 8 on the chart, isn’t doing as well in the rental market either. Speaking of disappointing sequels, “Gremlins 2” is no rental blockbuster. It entered the chart last week at No. 9 and then slipped to No. 10. “Longtime Companion,” the AIDS drama starring Bruce Davison, entered the chart at No. 33.

Will ‘Tracy’ Be a Chartbuster?

* Critics rapped “My Blue Heaven,” a comedy about a Mob informant hiding out in a small California town, featuring Steve Martin and Rick Moranis. Still, packing all that star power, it could make the rental Top 10. It debuted at No. 20.
