Cruise Ship Worker Stabbed in Argument

An argument between two crew members on a luxury cruise ship led to the stabbing death of a 35-year-old Portuguese man just after the ship Dawn Princess left Ensenada for its return to San Pedro Friday morning.

Some of the 890 passengers disembarking Friday said they were still unaware of the killing, which took place near the crew’s mess hall just before 8 p.m. Thursday when the ship was about 20 miles off the coast of Mexico.

Los Angeles police said the ship was under international law at the time of the killing and that the United States had no jurisdiction to prosecute or investigate the case. Since both the victim, Alexander Xisto, and the alleged killer, Leonardo Cruz, 52, were both from Portugal, Los Angeles authorities said the matter will be turned over to Portuguese officials.
