Detectives said Friday they are looking for three unidentified bandits who walked into a Newport Beach home, tied up the owner and stole cash and personal belongings valued at more than $20,000.

The 66-year-old homeowner, whose identity was withheld for his safety, was not injured during the 2:45 p.m. robbery Thursday of a single-family home in the 1500 block of Galaxy Drive, Police Sgt. Andy Gonis said.

Gonis said that the homeowner had just returned from a trip to Hawaii, and had left his garage door open while he carried his suitcase into his bedroom and began unpacking.

While in his bedroom, he was startled by two men, dressed in black and wearing masks and gloves, who walked up behind him and ordered him to lay on the bed, Gonis said.

One of the men carried a handgun, he said.

While one man kept watch over the victim, the other two ransacked the home, stealing two mink coats, the victim’s watch, two rings, about $100 in cash and other items.

The man managed to free himself and call police after the three left.

Gonis said detectives have little to go on because the thieves were masked.
