PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP : Orizaba Breaks Scoring Mark in Katella Victory

Senior Armando Orizaba set the Katella High School single-season record for goals as the Knights defeated Loara, 3-1, in an Empire League boys’ soccer match Friday at Katella.

Orizaba had two goals to increase his season total to 18, surpassing the mark of 16 he set last season.

Orizaba’s first goal came with five seconds left in the first half to give Katella a 1-0 lead. His two goals give him four in two league games.

Danny Moreno scored almost four minutes into the second half off an assist from Orizaba to give Katella (10-2-2, 1-0-1 in league) a 2-0 lead. Katella is the top-ranked team in the Orange County Coaches’ Poll.

Loara’s Dave Kang scored about 13 minutes later as Loara cut the lead in half. But Orizaba scored the final goal with about five minutes left for the Knights.

In the Angelus League:

Bishop Amat 3, Servite 1--Barclay Harty scored in a losing effort for host Servite (2-9-3, 0-2).

In the Century League:

Orange 1, Villa Park 0--Rogelio Marquez scored as No. 3 Orange won at Chapman College. Eric Jaime had five saves including one on a penalty kick for Orange (8-2-3, 1-0). Villa Park, ranked sixth, is 8-1-2, 0-1.

El Modena 4, Santa Ana Valley 0--Jason Martinez and Steve Weiser scored two goals each for host El Modena (6-0-1, 1-0). Freddie Romo had one save to record his fourth shutout.

Foothill 1, Canyon 0--Darin Taylor scored five minutes into the game for Foothill (7-4-3, 1-0) at Canyon. Goalie Jason Vlcek made nine saves for the Knights. Chris Snitko made 14 saves for Canyon (7-5-1, 0-1).

In the Empire League:

Cypress 2, Los Alamitos 1--Shan Charfarous and Shadi Badawiya scored for host Cypress (6-6-2, 1-1-1). Todd Platt scored for Los Alamitos. Jacky Hoppus had seven saves for Los Alamitos and Ray Arvizu had eight saves for Cypress.

Esperanza 1, El Dorado 0--Dan Snyder scored at 40:40 during injury time for Esperanza.

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 2, Fullerton 1--Jason Fichthelberg scored two goals, including the second with a minute left to break a 1-1 tie for visiting Sunny Hills (8-3, 2-0).

Fichthelberg scored in the first half to give Sunny Hills a 1-0 lead. Fullerton’s Antonio Casteneda tied the score at 1-1 with about eight minutes left in the game. Fullerton is 1-9-3, 0-1-1.

In the Garden Grove League:

Kennedy 3, Santiago 0--Jerry Vargas had two saves in his eighth shutout of the season for visiting Kennedy (7-3-3, 3-0-2). It was his fourth shutout in league.

Robert Weber scored two minutes into the game, then Ryan Bean scored 32 minutes into the half as Kennedy led, 2-0, at the half. Eddie Lidyard scored in the second half for Kennedy, which played most of the half a man down because of an ejection. Santiago, the defending league champion, is 1-2.

La Quinta 3, Bolsa Grande 1--Greg Yutani scored two goals, both in the second half, to lead the Aztecs (8-5-1, 4-1-1) at La Quinta. Tuan Dang scored midway through the first half to give La Quinta a 1-0 lead. Tim Henry scored for Bolsa Grande. Goalie Pruseuth Sotakoun made three for La Quinta. Ricardo Martinez made nine saves for Bolsa Grande.

Pacifica 4, Garden Grove 1--Mike Christie scored twice and time Brooks and Ron Weber each scored for visiting Pacifica. Brian Schwider scored on a penalty kick for Garden Grove.

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 1, Anaheim 0--Martin Wall scored on a penalty kick 18 minutes into the game as Brea-Olinda (3-6-3, 1-0) upset Anaheim (11-2-1, 1-1), ranked second in the county. Brea-Olinda goalie Neal Schuster had 13 saves, including one with two minutes left.

Savanna 2, Magnolia 2--Jaime Reyes scored on an indirect free kick with no time remaining to tie the score for Magnolia. Jorge Luviano scored with 10 minutes left to make the score, 2-1.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 3, Trabuco Hills 1--Brian Beaman, Brandon Wenzel and Giuseppe Lombardo scored for Laguna Hills (9-5-1, 2-0). Ryan Geyer scored for Trabuco Hills (5-6-3, 0-1).

Costa Mesa 2, Laguna Beach 0--Jacobo Garcia and Owen Markert scored for host Costa Mesa (7-2-1, 1-0). Gabe Birehman had 10 saves for Laguna Beach and Phil Chezek had three saves for Costa Mesa.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 1, Dana Hills 0--John-Eric Bolger scored on a penalty kick 10 minutes into the second half for visiting Capistrano Valley (4-5-3, 1-0).

Mission Viejo 1, El Toro 0--Frank Pace scored 15 minutes into the first half for host Mission Viejo (11-4-1, 1-0). Mission Viejo goalie Phil Dark had his eighth shutout of the season.

San Clemente 4, Irvine 2--Gus Garcia scored two goals and Scott Brooks and Brent Fayad scored one each for host San Clemente (2-6-3, 1-0).

In the Sea View League:

Newport Harbor 1, University 0--Brannon Coluccio scored 18 minutes into the first half for visiting Newport Harbor (11-4-2, 1-0).

Saddleback 5, Tustin 0--George Guerrero scored three goals and Jose Escudero added two for visiting Saddleback. Goalie Victor Solis had his sixth shutout of the season for Saddleback (11-1-2, 2-0).

In the Sunset League:

Santa Ana 2, Huntington Beach 1 (OT)--Jose Ramirez scored early in overtime for Santa Ana (3-0 in league play).

Santa Ana’s Gus Plasencia scored in the first half, and Huntington Beach’s Dean Syrengelas scored on a free kick in the second half to tie it at 1-1.
