Loyola Women Nudge San Diego
The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team broke a three-game losing streak and won its first West Coast Conference game, 64-60, against San Diego in Gersten Pavilion Saturday.
The Lions, who lost their conference opener Friday to Santa Clara, 80-70, used a 10-0 run late in the second half to stage a comeback and improve to 8-8 overall and 1-1 in the WCC.
Center Tricia Gibson scored a season-high 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Lions. Joelle Longobardi also got 14 rebounds and Lynn Flanagan added 18 points.
Loyola led at the half, 31-29, but San Diego rallied shortly after the break, pulling away to a 43-35 lead with about 14 minutes left.
But the Lions held the Toreras scoreless for more than four minutes and pulled to within a point on Flanagan’s three-point play with 5:46 left. The Lions took the lead for good seconds later, 55-54, when Christy Fortney was fouled and converted both free throws. Gibson, Fortney and Jamie Jesko all made free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
San Diego, which had a three-game win streak snapped, fell to 6-9 and 1-1. The Lions play rival Pepperdine at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Malibu.
