GOLF TUCSON OPEN : Nothing Amateur About His Lead
Phil Mickelson flirted with the 50s by shooting a 29 on the front nine Saturday and put himself in position to become only the second amateur in six years to win a PGA Tour event.
Mickelson shot a 65 to take a two-shot lead going into the final round of the $1-million Tucson Open. He is at 201, 15 under par.
David Peoples (66) and Corey Pavin (69) shared second at 203.
Mickelson played the first eight holes of the TPC at Starpass in seven under--five birdies and an eagle--and had a shot at the Tour’s single-round record of 59, set by Al Geiberger at Memphis in 1977.
The only amateur to win a Tour event since Gene Littler won the San Diego Open in 1954 is Scott Verplank, who won the Western Open in 1985.
