Pete Rose, the major leagues’ all-time hits leader, will become a gym teacher’s assistant in Cincinnati today as he begins a new phase of his sentence for federal tax offenses.

Rose is due to report at Heberle Elementary School to begin fulfilling a judge’s order that he perform 1,000 hours of community service. He is to work rotating assignments at Heberle and four other inner-city elementary schools until the end of the school year.

Rose, 49, will live at Talbert House, a halfway house to which he was released Jan. 7 after serving five months in the federal prison camp at Marion, Ill.

Rose is expected to assist gym teachers in whatever activity the school curriculum calls for, including wrestling and gymnastics. He also might perform bus duty--supervising students getting onto and off of buses.
