Events to commemorate the Jan. 15 birthday of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. will take place throughout the city of Los Angeles this week. The holiday will be observed on Jan. 21. Wednesday

Interfaith prayer breakfast--Dr. Cornel West of Princeton University will speak at an 8 a.m. prayer breakfast at Trinity Baptist Church, 2040 W. Jefferson Blvd., sponsored by the National Conference of Christians and Jews, Family Savings & Loan and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Los Angeles. The fee is $10 per person. Art and essay contest awards ceremony--Actress Sheryl Lee Ralph will be host of the ceremony at 1:30 p.m. at Bing Auditorium, University Park (Figueroa Street at Jefferson Boulevard). More than 3,800 Southland students competed in the contest, whose theme was “Making a Personal Commitment.” Free.

“Hope, Healing and Recovery” anti-substance abuse rally--Dr. Mark Ridley-Thomas, executive director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Los Angeles, the Rev. Ron Wright of St. Paul’s AME church in Santa Barbara and Virgie Walker, program director of Castle West, will speak at the Double Rock Baptist Church, 1900 West Alondra Blvd., Compton, at 6 p.m. The event is free and co-sponsors are Quality Foods International and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Los Angeles.

Interfaith service celebration--The Rev. Bernice King will speak at a 9 a.m. service at Santa Monica College, in the Pavilion at 1900 Pico Blvd. The event is free and sponsored by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Westside Coalition.

South African demonstration and march--Co-sponsored by Los Angeles Student Coalition and Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Los Angeles. Begins at 11 a.m. at Pan Pacific Park, 3rd and Gardner streets, and ends at the South African Consulate, 50 N. La Cienega Blvd., Beverly Hills.

Kingdom Day Parade--Begins at 11 a.m. at Crenshaw and Martin Luther King boulevards and ends at Menlo and 39th streets. Grand marshal will be Wayne Cox, president of Freedom Ford of South Gate, and queen will be Kimberly Williams, 19, a UCLA law student.

Birthday celebration--Dr. James H. Cone of Union Theological Seminary will be the keynote speaker at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel, 404 S. Figueroa St. Reception begins at 6:30 p.m. with dinner at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $75, $150 and $350. For information, call (213) 295-KING.

The 1991 Kingdom Day Parade will be held next Monday to commemorate the Jan. 15 birthday of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. * Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard will be closed to traffic and parking. Parade will begin at 11 a.m.

* Reviewing stand for judges will be at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Bronson Avenue.

* Termination point will be at the Coliseum at Menlo and 39th streets.

* Registration and parade assignments will be at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Marlton Avenue.

* More than 4,000 people are expected to participate.
