A program that could provide as much as $23 million in city funds for youth-oriented programs over the next 25 years was approved Wednesday by the Burbank City Council.

The program was proposed by Mayor Tom Flavin as part of the council’s “Focus On Youth” policy to provide funding for youth activities through the city’s Redevelopment Agency.

John Nicoll, city management services director, said new development in the city’s three redevelopment areas will generate taxes that will be used for youth-oriented projects.

The program stipulates that 5% of future redevelopment tax income from Golden State Redevelopment be targeted for programs such as park improvements or building gymnasiums.
