Irvine Students Get Top Honors in Math Contest

Seventh- and eighth-graders from Venado Middle School in Irvine and ninth- and 10-graders from Irvine High School were grand-trophy winners in the 19th Saddleback College Math Contest.

The competition drew 250 students from 25 junior high schools and 24 high schools in South County who were tested in introductory math, algebra and geometry.

Five-member teams from each of the schools took one-hour examinations of varying degrees of difficulty prepared by Saddleback College professors Dennis Hada and Kaz Tarui.

Laguna Beach resident Mark Gumbiner, a 20-year member of Bowers Museum who has a special interest in Latin American folk art and American Indian art, has been named to the museum’s Board of Governors.

Jaunetta (Johnnie) Strohmyer will be honored as Cypress’ Citizen of the Year at Cypress College’s 1991 American Awards Dinner on Feb. 23 at the Disneyland Hotel.

The award recognizes individuals who perform community service. Strohmyer’s favorite project is the Hotline of Southern California, which residents of Cypress and other nearby communities can call to discuss issues of concern to them.

She became involved with the hot line 17 years ago when it was founded and has continued to serve there.

Mission Viejo resident Ron Kennedy has been named director of information systems for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, which provides more than half of the water used in Orange and other counties in Southern California.

He will oversee the district’s information systems design, data processing and communications branches and 95 employees.

The Army veteran, a graduate of the International Technical Institute in Washington, joined the district in 1966 as its first programmer analyst.

Jennifer L. Wootton, a Costa Mesa High School graduate attending St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y., has been named to the dean’s list for academic achievement at the liberal arts institution of 2,000 students.

The Orange County Police Chiefs and Sheriffs Assn. has named Costa Mesa Police Chief Dave Snowden as its new president, and Fullerton Police Chief Philip A. Goehring was named secretary-treasurer.

Santa Ana resident William O. Christy, corporate chairman of Certified Grocers of California Ltd., has been elected president of the 4,000-member Merchants and Manufacturers Assn., a California employer organization that offers business advice to member companies.

Mater Dei High School student Michael Mahan, 17, of Newport Beach was presented his Boy Scout Eagle rank at a recent Court of Honor. He completed landscaping and beautification at a retirement home for his community service project.
