A controlled burn at the Miramar landfill filled the skies with smoke Saturday afternoon, alarming some residents.

Several local media stations and law enforcement agencies fielded calls from worried residents about the cause of the smoke.

Glenn Cashmore, assignment editor for KFMB-TV (Channel 8), said the station received “a couple dozen” calls concerning the cause of the smoke.

“People called saying they drove by and saw smoke,” Cashmore said.

“Their first thought was that there was an explosion or a terrorist attack.”

Spokesmen for the San Diego Fire Department and Sheriff’s Department said they had also received a few calls about the burn.
