SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : Trustees to Ponder State Budget Cuts

Share

The Capistrano Unified School District board will discuss proposed state budget cuts at tonight’s meeting.

Administrators said it is too early to say what effect the cuts might have on the district but that the board members need to be made aware of the situation.

“It will probably be another two weeks before we know the impact on the district,” said Carole F. Bailey, the district’s director of fiscal services. “I’m sitting here right now with my calculator and my computer, crunching numbers.”

The district is expecting a budget cut of $4 million in fiscal year 1991-92, according to reports. The district’s budget is $112 million this year.

Because of a projected $7-billion deficit in the fiscal 1991-92 state budget, Gov. Pete Wilson has asked the Legislature not to give schools $2 billion mandated under Proposition 98, the education-funding initiative passed by voters in 1988. Under Wilson’s proposal, the state’s education spending would be $16.26 billion in 1991-92. That amount is $120 million more than this year, but because of increased enrollment, per-student spending would drop from $4,168 to $4,076.

Some of that money is taken up by state and county programs. The district receives about $2,900 a student per year.

The board meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at district headquarters, 32972 Calle Perfecto.
