LEARNING MORE ABOUT EDWARD HOPPER

Newport Harbor Art Museum will offer a film and lecture program and classes for children and adults in conjunction with the upcoming exhibition, “Edward Hopper: Selections from the Permanent Collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art,” which opened Sunday and will be held through March 17.

* On Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m., the museum will screen “Edward Hopper” (49 minutes), a documentary about the artist’s life, which includes his comments on specific works and conversations with curator Gail Levin, and “Hopper’s Silence” (46 minutes), which combines archival footage, commentary and views of his paintings. Tickets are $3 at the door ($2 for members), plus museum admission ($4.50 adults, $2 students and seniors, $1 children ages 6 to 17).

* On Feb. 24 at 3 p.m., Susan C. Larsen, co-organizer of the Hopper exhibition and adjunct curator at the Whitney, will lecture on “Edward Hopper and his Contemporaries.” The talk will include a discussion of works by John Sloan, Charles Burchfield, Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton. Tickets are $3 general ($2 for members) at the door, plus museum admission.

* Hands-on workshops for children ages 6 to 12 with activities related to the exhibit will be held in two sessions. The first session meets Tuesdays, Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The second session meets Wednesdays, Feb. 6 through 27, also from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The fee is $40 per session. * Classes in drawing and watercolor painting for children ages 8 to 12 will meet Fridays, March 1 through 15, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Students will sketch and paint the Upper Newport Bay area and learn how artists, such as Hopper, used nature as a source for their paintings. * An adult beginning and intermediate class in watercolor will be held Saturdays, Jan. 26 through Feb. 23, from 1 to 3 p.m. The class includes gallery talks about the Hopper exhibition, emphasizing the artist’s landscape and portrait watercolors.
