Johnson Not Winning, but Is He Faster?
In regard to the Sunkist track meet and the coverage, what I read didn’t sound very much like what I saw. I guess my main gripe is with the way the press and the meet organizer pander to Ben Johnson, the Canadian prima donna. They pay him an exorbitant amount ($30,000) just to show up, make the entire audience stand to the playing of the Canadian national anthem, and then the press ignores the winner, Andre Cason, and practically kill each other for pictures and words from his eminence, the loser.
What kind of message does this send to the thousands of young athletes in attendance? Use drugs and cheat and the press will beat a path to your door, organizers will shower you with money and lifetime bans will last only two years?
