HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Whistle Works for Palmdale in Final Seconds

A technical foul called on the Saugus High bench with four seconds to play helped Palmdale defeat the Centurions, 55-53, Friday night in a Golden League game at Saugus.

Saugus (13-8, 2-4 in league play) trailed, 54-53, with four seconds to play when Saugus’ Jeff Dains was whistled for an offensive foul on a drive to the basket. The Saugus bench received the technical when the coaches argued the call. Palmdale’s Jason Grimes made one of the two shots.

Ty Gaynes scored 18 points to lead Palmdale (12-8, 3-3), and Grimes finished with 14.

Center Greg Yumbar had 17 points and 15 rebounds for Saugus.

In other boys’ games:

Granada Hills 71, Kennedy 59--Jerry Allen had 19 points to lead visiting Granada Hills (16-4, 5-2) in a North Valley League game.

El Camino Real 61, Chatsworth 53--Clyde Price and Sam Sarpong each scored 24 points to lead the Conquistadores in a West Valley League game at Chatsworth. Sarpong, a sophomore point guard, made five of five shots from three-point range.

Chatsworth led, 23-12, after the first quarter, but El Camino Real (10-7, 3-4)caught up, 32-32, at halftime. J. P. Labrador scored 15 points to lead Chatsworth (5-11, 2-5).

Reseda 60, San Fernando 36--Marquis Burns scored 23 points to help Reseda (4-3, 9-9) defeat the Tigers (5-15, 0-7) in a West Valley League game at San Fernando.

North Hollywood 56, Locke 54 (OT)--Visiting North Hollywood sent the nonconference game into overtime when Robert Hill (30 points) made a long three-point shot at the buzzer.

Hill, a junior guard, scored 30 points, one shy of his career high. He made six of six three-point attempts, five of six two-point shots and two of three free throws.

Tim O’Malley scored the winning basket on a layup in overtime and finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. North Hollywood (10-9) broke a four-game losing streak.

Birmingham 62, Sherman Oaks CES 33--Maurice Spillers had 13 points and 13 rebounds in an East Valley League game at Birmingham. Center Kevin Horton, who has missed the last two games with a pulled groin muscle, came off the bench to score 12 points for Birmingham (4-11, 2-3).

L.A. Jordan 88, Canoga Park 68--Senior guard Marvis Dumas scored 28 points for Jordan as Canoga Park (7-14) lost two starters to foul trouble in a nonconference game at Jordan.

St. Paul 57, Notre Dame 56--Steve Colella’s off-balance, 18-foot shot attempt bounced in and out of the basket in the waning seconds of a Mission League game at St. Paul, allowing the Swordsmen (10-10, 7-2) to break the Knights’ 11-game win streak.

The Knights (17-4, 8-1), who shot 52% from the field in their win over Alemany Thursday, made just 21 of 53 (40%) from the field against St. Paul.

Marcello Anderson-Tellez scored a game-high 24 points to pace the Knights, and Bob DaCorsi added 17.

Canyon 61, Ridgecrest Burroughs 37--Jermaine Nixon scored 24 points to lead host Canyon (12-8, 4-2) to the Golden League victory. Joe Ferguson added 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Ventura 60, Buena 41--Mike Ryken scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead host Ventura (10-8, 6-3) in a Channel League game. Lance Fay scored 18 points for Buena (11-7, 5-4).

Rio Mesa 66, Hueneme 58--Center Israel Fuentes had 11 points for host Hueneme (6-12, 3-6) in a Channel League game.

Santa Clara 47, Calabasas 28--Junior forward Stevie Amar scored 18 points to lead the Saints (18-4, 5-0) to a Frontier League victory at Santa Clara. Chuck Sergis and Greg Waugh each scored 10 points for Calabasas (6-12, 0-5).

Westlake 59, Agoura 58--John Van Spyk made a rebound basket with two seconds remaining to give host Westlake (6-12, 3-6) a Marmonte League victory.

Sean Martin, who had a game-high 27 points, had made a layup with 20 seconds remaining to put Agoura (10-7, 4-5) ahead, 58-57.

Channel Islands 64, Simi Valley 49--Marlowe Durmiendo scored 10 points in the first quarter to help host Channel Islands (15-4, 7-2) take an 18-10 lead in the Marmonte League game. Durmiendo finished with 21 to tie Stephane Brown for team scoring honors. Michael Crawford scored 13 for Simi Valley (8-12, 3-6).

Glendale 77, Hoover 67--The Dynamiters snapped a three-game losing streak in a Pacific League game. Jerry Armen and Mike Wright led Glendale (12-8, 3-3) with 20 and 19 points. Dave Ulloa scored 19 for Hoover (6-13, 1-5).

Burroughs 63, San Gabriel 57--Victor Hernandez scored 18 points and Rick Mulloy added 19 rebounds for Burroughs (9-9, 3-3) in a Foothill League game.

Harvard 75, St. Genevieve 36--Spencer Miller had 10 points and 12 rebounds and 11 Harvard players scored in the Saracens’ San Fernando Valley League win.

Western Christian 75, Montclair Prep 67--Chris Bruce had 42 points to help Western Christian (12-6, 4-2) deal visiting Montclair Prep its first Alpha League loss.

Montclair Prep (15-3, 5-1) pulled to within four in the fourth quarter, but Bruce made four consecutive free throws.

L.A. Baptist 52, Village Christian 39--The Knights outscored the Crusaders, 20-7, in the fourth quarter to break a 32-32 tie after three periods in the Alpha League game at Village Christian.

GIRLS

Hart 48, Alhambra 34--Hart limited the Moors to five points in each of the first two quarters in building a 36-10 halftime advantage in the Foothill League game at Hart. Anjanette Dionne led Hart (18-4, 5-1) with 21 points, six assists and five steals.

Chaminade 57, Notre Dame 54 (OT)--Freshman forward Aubry Tompkins made a three-point play with three seconds to play to give Chaminade (13-5, 3-3) a Mission League win at Notre Dame.

Glendale 67, Hoover 31--Forwards Tracy Young and Jennifer Dalton combined for 47 points and 23 rebounds for Glendale (14-5, 6-0) in a Pacific League game.

El Camino Real 58, Cleveland 55--Angela Rich hit a three-point basket with two seconds left to lift El Camino Real (8-6, 6-1) at home.

Grant 55, Sylmar 44--Grant (10-5, 5-0) limited Sylmar to four points in the fourth quarter of the East Valley League game at Grant.

North Hollywood 85, Locke 33--Jacinda Sweet and Suzi Shimoyama each scored 18 points to lead host North Hollywood (19-3) in a nonleague game.

Van Nuys 59, South Gate 47--Cicely Brewster made 11 of 16 field-goal attempts and scored a career-high 24 points for host Van Nuys (17-4) in a nonleague game.

Reseda 61, Kennedy 47--Center Charon Walker (19 points, 11 rebounds) and forwards Nedra Chambers (10 points, 14 rebounds) and Nikki Blair (14 points, 15 rebounds) paced Reseda (7-7).

Granada Hills 46, San Fernando 19--Karen Berkowitz scored a game-high 26 points to help the Highlanders (5-6, 2-1) defeat San Fernando in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Granada Hills.
