How Special Wins La Primera Derby
How Special defeated Dashes Dish and Fusion Illusion in a three-horse photo finish to win the $138,000 La Primera Del Ano Derby for quarter horses Friday night at Los Alamitos.
The winner, ridden by Danny Cardoza, covered the 400 yards in 19.90 seconds and paid $5.60 to win as the favorite in the field of 10 three-year-old fillies. Dashes Dish finished second, a head back, with Fusion Illusion third, another neck behind.
The Oklahoma-bred daughter of Special Effort, trained by Bruce Hawkinson, earned $54,374 for her second victory in five starts.
