A 29-year-old man died after he was found shot in Oxnard on Sunday night, police said Monday.

Carlos Arthur Martinez was found about 10 p.m. in the 1300 block of Felicia Court in Oxnard’s Colonia district, Oxnard Police Sgt. Denny Phillips said.

Martinez, whose address was not known, was shot twice in the torso, Phillips said.

He was taken to St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, where he died, Oxnard Police Lt. Gordon Hubbard said. He died from gunshot wounds, according to the Ventura County coroner’s office.

Residents at the Colonia Village apartments, a public housing complex, said they heard two or three shots Sunday night but thought that they were firecrackers.

“They didn’t know it was a gun,” said David Magallanes, manager of the complex.

Residents told Magallanes that they saw Martinez run from across the street and fall onto the sidewalk but did not see his assailant.

Residents said they were shaken by the shooting.

“Any time something happens, it stirs up the whole community here,” Magallanes said. “Nobody likes to see it.”

Police said they had no leads on an assailant or a motive.
