Teacher-Worker Sickout Shuts 4 Schools Early

An estimated 430 Torrance teachers and other employees called in sick Monday, forcing the city’s four high schools to close for the day at lunchtime.

Torrance Unified School District officials described the absences as an illegal sickout. A Torrance Teachers Assn. spokesman said the union did not authorize a job action, but that one was understandable in view of prolonged contract talks. Both sides expected teachers back in school today.

School Board President David Sargent said teachers have been warned that they must have an explanation from a doctor in order to be paid for Monday. William A. Franchini, union executive director, said the district in the past has not demanded excuses for one-day absences.
