Bonner Plans to Compete in 4th Sport at Cal State Northridge as High Jumper

Who says you can’t do it all?

Certainly not Sherdrick Bonner, who has played three sports for Cal State Northridge and is expected to compete in a fourth during the upcoming track and field season.

Cal State Northridge’s starting quarterback the past two seasons, Bonner also played on the basketball team during the 1987-’88 campaign and currently is playing on Northridge’s third-ranked volleyball team.

It is Bonner’s first season playing volleyball at an organized level.

And if that isn’t enough, Bonner will add the high jump to his Northridge athletic resume when time permits.

“A lot of people don’t realize it, but he was a very good high jumper in high school,” Northridge track Coach Don Strametz said. “He’s a great all-around athlete.”

The 6-foot-4 Bonner, a fifth-year senior, placed third in the state championships as a senior at Azusa High in 1986 and had a best of 6 feet 10 inches. He also cleared 6-11 3/4 in the Northridge intramural championships last spring, Strametz said.

Bonner passed for a total of 2,949 yards and 11 touchdowns during his junior and senior seasons and averaged 3.6 points and 2.0 rebounds a game during his lone season on the basketball team.

“He’s got a lot of natural talent,” Strametz added. “If the guy worked at it, he could probably be a 7-4 or 7-5 high jumper some day.”
