The Huron River still flows near campus, but the Hurons’ nickname is history at Eastern Michigan University.

Bowing to pressure from the state Civil Rights Commission and other groups, the school’s board of regents voted 6 to 0 Wednesday to accept President William Shelton’s recommendation and drop the nickname, borrowed from an Indian tribe.

The Michigan Civil Rights Commission voted in 1988 to ask colleges and high schools around the state to drop Indian names for their sports teams.
