A 17-year-old boy broke into a grocery store in Bellflower and held authorities at bay for more than five hours early Thursday before a police dog found him in a storage area. Lakewood sheriff’s station deputies were notified shortly before midnight Wednesday that someone was trying to break into Nick’s Ranch Meat Market at 9410 Compton Blvd.

Moments later, they received an anonymous call about a man with a gun at the same address, Deputy Roger Hom said. Deputies surrounded the building. Initial efforts to talk the suspect out failed, and a special weapons team and canine unit were summoned.

The dog and members of the weapons team stormed the location about 4:40 a.m. An hour later, the dog located a person hiding in a storage area upstairs, Deputy Mary Landreth said.

The suspect was identified only as a 17-year-old boy who recently moved to the Los Angeles area.
