In the Sockers’ 10-3 victory over the Wichita Wings Friday night, Wichita proved that there are at least two ways to play reckless soccer.

Defender David Banks, who was shoved head-first into the end boards by Wichita’s Omar Gomez, and Paul Wright, who was punched by Wichita’s Terry Rowe, can tell you about one form of Wichita’s reckless style.

Said Banks, “It seems that they can’t keep up with us on the field so they try to bruise us a little bit and hope to interfere with our play.”

Paul Dougherty, Kevin Crow, Ben Collins, Brian Quinn, and Wes Wade can tell you about another kind. All scored first-half goals when goalie Ron Fearon ventured off his line.

“When your team’s not defending properly,” he said, “you have to come off your line.”

It might not have mattered had Fearon played it safe. At least that’s the way Sockers Coach Ron Newman saw it.

“Poor old Fearon,” Newman said. “We looked like a bunch of Peles out there tonight.”

After determining that maybe his team had played a bit too recklessly in the first half, Wichita Coach Terry Nicholl switched to goalie Kris Peat.

That is a little like starting water rationing after the reservoir runs dry.

The Sockers led at halftime, 8-2. It was the first time since Feb. 19, 1984 that they scored eight goals in a half (they beat the New York Cosmos that night, 10-8).

Recapping Fearon’s tribulations chronologically:

--Dougherty, a step in front of the goal line, tapped in a loose ball after Fearon failed to cover a rebound of Waad Hirmez’s shot.

--After Wichita’s Brad Smith tied the game, 1-1, Crow converted a centering pass from Quinn. Fearon was out of the penalty area trying to challenge Quinn.

--Wright and Quinn then worked a give-and-go with Wright finding the net with a shot from just inside the red line.

--Still in the first quarter, and after Chico Borja pulled Wichita to within one, 3-2, Ben Collins back-healed a pass from Wes Wade into an open net.

--Just 1:25 into the second period, Wright again scored from long-range after taking a pass from Michael Collins.

--Three minutes later, Quinn found an empty net after Wright had raced by Danny Pena in the midfield and drew Fearon off his line before centering the ball.

--The seventh Socker goal perhaps was the most embarrassing. Wade scored from midfield after intercepting a pass from Fearon, who had dribbled up to the red line.

--With 1:28 remaining in the quarter, Fearon tripped Hirmez, who was on a breakaway, and was whistled for a two-minute penalty. The Sockers received a shootout attempt, which Ben Collins put away easily.

The Sockers scored twice in the fourth quarter. First, Hirmez finished a pass from Branko Segota. Six minutes later it was Segota putting away a pass from Hirmez.
