Billboard With a Point of View

“Guerra de Culturas” (War of Cultures), a billboard created by Los Angeles artist Daniel J. Martinez, will go up in downtown San Diego this week at the corner of Broadway and 16th Street.

The image is the first of three outdoor billboards designed by nationally recognized artists as part of the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art’s “Dos Ciudades/Two Cities” project, which addresses the San Diego/Tijuana border.

“I think this is really in line with their project--what better to address those issues than money,” said Martinez, whose entirely computer-generated image juxtaposes an American dollar bill with a Mexican 100 peso note to question the economic struggles related to the border. “I just wish it could go up right on the border, so half of it was in the U.S. and half in Mexico.”

The billboard, which is part of Martinez’s series of public artworks entitled “Unspoken Truths,” will be on view throughout the month of February.
