A man who threatened police with a dinner fork was shot and wounded by an officer Monday, police said. Officers responded to reports of an assault in the 1000 block of East 52nd Street in Los Angeles about 7 p.m. They were told by residents of a board and care facility that a fellow resident had stabbed another resident with a large dinner fork after an argument.

Officers went inside and saw the suspect, Larry Wiggins, 38, holding a large dinner fork. The suspect apparently took a step toward uniformed Officer Kevin McKenna, 28, said Lt. William Hall, head of the Police Department’s officer-involved shooting team.

“Officer McKenna, fearing he would be injured by the serving fork, fired two shots from his 9-millimeter weapon,” Hall said. Wiggins suffered a wound to his left arm. He was treated at County-USC Medical Center and booked into the jail ward on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a officer.
