Authorities searched Wednesday for a 22-year-old man who jumped off the Oceanside Pier and was swept away in the heavy surf, Oceanside Lifeguard Capt. Matt Stephens said.
Witnesses told police that Jose Charbajal of Cardiff was leaving the pier just before midnight Tuesday when he climbed onto a railing, announced he would jump for $20, and leaped into the breaking surf, Stephens said.
Charbajal latched onto a piling and screamed for help, Stephens said. Two friends jumped in after him, but 6-foot waves kept them from bringing him to shore.
The friends made it to shore and last saw Charbajal being swept south by the current, Stephens said.
