UC Irvine Player’s Charge Disputed by Hawaii Coach

University of Hawaii volleyball Coach Alan Rosehill disputes a UC Irvine player’s charge that Rosehill misled him about expenses and aid, thereby prompting him to transfer from Hawaii.

Leland Quinn, a freshman from Ocean View High School, attended Hawaii during the fall semester but transferred to Irvine, where he is a starter on the men’s volleyball team that lost Hawaii Wednesday night in Crawford Hall.

Rosehill, responding to Quinn’s comments in Wednesday’s edition of The Times, said that although Quinn did not sign a letter of intent, he signed a scholarship agreement that specified the amount of aid he would receive.

Quinn said he was told he would need about $1,000 of his own money, but he later found out he would have needed more than twice that to cover expenses, including housing costs.

“I’m not bringing kids in and leaving them (without promised assistance),” Rosehill said.

Rosehill said he told Quinn to leave the team because of repeated missed practices.

“He didn’t leave of his own accord,” Rosehill said. “He left for non-performance and for failing to show for practice.”

Rosehill said Quinn attended “maybe two out of 18” practices.

Quinn also said a number of dissatisfied players had left the program. Rosehill said that was part of the normal paring down of the team from a group of more than 30 to a traveling squad of 12.
