HUNTINGTON BEACH : Plan Revised After Residents Complain

Share

In response to residents’ protests, the Planning Commission this week revised the conceptual plan for a 65-acre development on the former Meadowlark Airport site.

Along with revising the concept for the project proposal, the commission also approved a shopping center for a 15-acre portion of the site.

Residents said that they supported adding the shopping center but that the developer shouldn’t build apartments so close to their single-family homes because of traffic and noise problems that could result.

The new plan allows the developer to build as many as 600 residential units, including homes, condominiums and apartments. However, at the request of Commissioner Victor Leipzig, the commission voted, 4-3, to locate the apartments farther away from an adjoining neighborhood than originally proposed.

The development concept for the former airport, which was closed in 1989, includes plans for a road that would bisect the project, connecting Warner and Heil avenues.

The shopping center, to be built on Warner Avenue near Bolsa Chica Street, is planned to include a grocery store and a shoe outlet.

The commission’s decision on the plan will become final unless appealed to the City Council by Friday.
