Council OKs Mayor’s Nominations

Share

Siding with Mayor Daniel H. Young, the majority of the City Council approved citizen advisory board nominations made by Young despite objections from two council members.

Young had asked the council to substitute five of his nominations for those selected by Councilman Richards L. Norton.

During an exchange, Norton told Young: “It’s your town--you do it your way.”

In a previous interview, Young said he had nominated his own appointments so that the council could choose the “best candidates.”

Although several speakers from the audience told the council they opposed the substitutions, the council voted with the mayor. Usually, council members appoint their own representatives to the advisory boards after an election.

Councilman John Acosta said the council was making the wrong decision.

“This is a cold, calculated and a vindictive move,” Acosta said. “It’s a move to embarrass Norton.”
