Gwynn Has Surgery for Tumor
Padre right fielder Tony Gwynn has undergone surgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital to have a tumor removed from his mouth, the team announced Friday.
Dr. Cliff Colwell, the team physician, said the tumor was benign.
Gwynn, 30, entered the hospital Thursday to have a polyp removed from his mouth, according to a four-paragraph statement issued Friday night by the team. However, further tests revealed a tumor, necessitating a 4 1/2-hour operation.
Gwynn, who was expected to leave the hospital today, told the team he will be ready for the start of spring training.
“I didn’t even know about the tumor until afterwards,” Gwynn said, “so I didn’t have time to get scared.”
