Snow Cancels Race at Olympic Site

Snow and poor visibility caused the cancellation Friday of a men’s World Cup skiing race, the first international event on the future Olympic downhill site at Val d’Isere, France.

The downhill race, on a course carved into the Bellevarde mountain, was scheduled exactly one year before the opening ceremonies of the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville.

For the record:

Former major league slugger George Foster has accepted a coaching position at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn., not Fairfield, as reported in Saturday’s editions.

Thus, Olympic organizers got a taste of possible future problems.

Another downhill is set for today with a super-G scheduled for Sunday but weather forecasts say the snow will continue. More than six inches fell overnight and snow became heavier in the afternoon.

The cancellation was just another in a series of recent problems that have plagued Olympic organizers. Recent bobsled and luge races were postponed because of security concerns on the new bobsled run, and safety concerns led to cancellation of a ski jumping tournament in Courchevel last month.
