ROCK THE BOX: Chalk up another victory for foes of the CD long box. When U2 puts out its next CD, tentatively scheduled for this fall, the Irish rockers plan to go without a long box. According to U2 manager Paul McGuiness: “North America is the only territory where this wasteful practice takes place. By the time the band releases its next album, we expect the long box to be a memory. And needless to say, we will never release another CD with a long box.” . . . Public Enemy has a new member--Sister Souljah, a New York political activist and rapper, whose hard-edged style can be heard on the current Terminator X single, “Wanna Be Dancin’ (Buck Whylin’), which has actually peaked higher than PE’s current single, “Can’t Do Nuttin’ for Ya Man,” on the rap charts. . . . And how’s this for a rock double shot? Nigel Harrison (an ex-Blondie member) is now an A&R; exec at Interscope Records while playing bass for local band the Brothers Figaro.
