‘DEGENERATE ART’--THE EVENTS

The County Museum of Art and nine other local institutions have scheduled a wide range of educational events in conjunction with “Degenerate Art: The Fate of the Avant-Garde in Nazi Germany.” Following are some highlights of the concerts, lectures, symposia, films and dramatic productions that are scheduled through April 29. MUSIC

“Music of Theresienstadt,” a program of music written at a concentration camp, will be performed by soprano Emilie Berendsen and pianists Edith Kraus and David Bloch at USC’s Arnold Schoenberg Institute on March 12, 8 p.m. The institute will host two related lectures: “From Vienna to Auschwitz: The Musical and Spiritual Odyssey of Viktor Ullmann” by David Bloch on March 5 and “Entartete Musik: The Aryanization of Emotions” by music critic Albrecht Dumling on March 20, both at 8 p.m.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic will present “Tribute to Ernst Krenek” at the Japan America Theater on March 18 and “Entartete Musik” at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion of the Music Center on March 21-23, both at 8 p.m.

LECTURES

Six talks by American and German scholars will begin at the museum next Sunday, 1 p.m. with “Opening Day Remarks” by curator Stephanie Barron, LACMA trustee Franklin D. Murphy, who saw the 1937 exhibition, and Wolf-Dieter Dube, director general of the Berlin State Museums. The series will continue on March 3, 10, 24 and April 7 and 28, all at 1 p.m..

Lectures on emigre experiences, at the Hollywood Bowl Museum, will feature writers Lawrence Weschler(April 8) and Nicholas Slonimsky (April 15), producer/director Gottfried Reinhardt (April 22) and composer David Raksin (April 29), all at 7 p.m.

SYMPOSIA

“International Responses to the Condemnation of ‘Degenerate’ Art,” at LACMA on April 6, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m., will present as panelists Karin von Maur, Staatsgalerie Stuttgart; Marla S. Stone, Princeton University; Stephan Lackner, Santa Barbara-based writer; Sarah Wilson, Courtauld Institute of Art, London; Georg Kreis, University of Basel, and Cecile Whiting, UCLA. Peter Selz, professor emeritus at UC Berkeley, will moderate.

“Degenerate Art: Nazi Ideological Warfare and the Presentation of Art,” a UCLA Extension-sponsored symposium, will be presented at LACMA on April 14, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

FILMS

Zurich filmmaker Erwin Leiser will lead a seminar on “Nazi Cinema” at LACMA on April 17, 22, 23 and 24, 8 p.m.

STAGE

“Degenerate Art,” a play by Tom Jacobson dramatizing the plight of an Expressionist artist in Nazi Germany, will debut on Feb. 22 at The Complex in West Hollywood.
