Raising Sales Tax to Build Jail
On behalf of the Orange County Chiefs of Police and Sheriff’s Assn., I would like to reiterate our strong support for a half-cent sales tax for construction and operation of a new Orange County jail.
There is nothing more frustrating for a police officer than to arrest a criminal, bring him to jail and learn that the offender was released the same day because of a federal court order won by the American Civil Liberties Union.
Without a new jail, our police officers and sheriff’s deputies are unable to make sure that criminals are removed from our neighborhoods. Without a new jail, criminals will not be deterred by tough laws which they know we cannot enforce. In short, without a new jail, public safety will continue to be at risk.
DAVID L. SNOWDEN, President, Orange County Chiefs’ & Sheriff’s Assn.
