A biplane performing stunts over a rural area crashed and burst into flames Saturday, killing the two people aboard, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department.

The names of the victims were being withheld until their families could be notified, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Carl Dennis. Authorities said both victims were from Northern California.

The yellow Boeing Stearman was attempting a loop and was only a few feet from the ground when it crashed, according to witnesses.

The plane was flying out of Schellville, a small town near Petaluma, and crashed at the Black Point gun club about 12 miles to the east, according to Art Morriston, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

It was the second fatal airplane crash in the Petaluma area in two days.

The pilot of a small private plane was killed Friday when his single-engine Cessna crashed south of the runway at Petaluma Municipal Airport.
