Campus Celebrates Black History Month

A full slate of entertainment, including art exhibits and a cultural fair, will begin this week at Cal Lutheran in celebration of Black History Month.

“Voices,” a musical revue of African-American history in music, song and dance, will be performed at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Samuelson Chapel.

Featured is the 15-member Fire Choir accompanied by a piano trio.

“Their work is very dramatic,” event coordinator Kasandra Sheard said.

The professionally touring choir performs spirituals, folk songs and a Billie Holiday piece, which Sheard said is one of the highlights of the performance.

Tickets are $5 or free for those with CLU identification.

Pearson Library will exhibit a variety of African-American art from Monday through Feb. 24. Featured are sculptures, crafts and works from local painter Gloria Jones.

Live jazz, various artworks and traditional foods representative of the diverse cultures on the CLU campus are all part of a cultural fair to be held Feb. 22 in Kingsman Park.

Festivities begin at 11:30 a.m.; there is no charge.

The final event is “A Celebration in Black” at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 24 in the Auditorium.

Student performers will present an extravaganza of music, dance, readings and dramatic productions. No charge.
