Malibu : Incorporation Vote Set

Share

A measure in the state Legislature aimed at speeding the incorporation of Malibu is scheduled for a vote by the Senate today, after having been unanimously approved by a Senate committee last week.

The measure by Sen. Ed Davis (R-Santa Clarita) would also allow Malibu, once it becomes a city, to collect $1.25 million in property tax revenue for the fiscal year that begins in July, which it would otherwise lose because Los Angeles County failed to file certain documents with the state by last Dec. 31. The county opposes the bill, which has not yet been considered by the Assembly.

The County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday cleared the way for Malibu to become a city March 28. Although Malibu’s leaders have indicated they will not push to incorporate before March 28 even if the bill is signed into law before then, they are continuing to pursue the legislation in a bid to recoup the tax revenue.
