The 1991 Handbook for Selecting Roses, published by the American Rose Society, rates more than 1,000 varieties that are commercially available in nurseries or by mail order.

Each rose is rated on a 10-point scale. The higher the number, the better ARS members rate it. This is a good indicator of how a particular variety will do in your garden. The handbook also provides information on color and horticultural classification (hybrid teas, floribundas, miniatures, etc).

Special note is made of varieties that have been All-America rose, Miniature Award of Excellence and American Rose Center Trial Ground winners.
