NHL ROUNDUP : Fleury’s Three Goals Lead Flames Over Blues

Share

The Calgary Flames are making their move.

With little Theoren Fleury posting a hat trick, the Flames beat the St. Louis Blues, 7-4, Sunday night at Calgary.

Their second victory in a row put the Flames only one point behind the first-place Kings in the Smythe Division race.

Brett Hull scored twice for the Blues and had an assist, but St. Louis couldn’t catch up with the elusive 5-foot-6 Fleury.

After setting up the Flames’ first goal, Fleury scored twice in the second period, the goals coming less than two minutes apart. The second came with Calgary a player short and gave the Flames a 5-2 lead.

Fleury scored his 30th goal of the season early in the third period to thwart a Blues’ rally.

Hull, who also had an assist, has 63 goals in 58 games.

Newcomer Paul Fenton scored two goals for the Flames, who outshot the Blues, 38-32.

Winnipeg 6, Quebec 0--Guy Lafleur was given a rousing ovation in his final appearance at Winnipeg, but he and his teammates weren’t treated as well by rookie goalie Rick Tabaracci.

Tabaracci stopped 25 shots for his first NHL shutout. Brent Ashton scored twice to give the youngster all the offense he needed.

Lafleur, 39, announced this would be his last western swing as a player.

“I was touched by the ovation,” said the Hall of Famer, who came back from retirement to resume playing.

Detroit 3, Chicago 3--Steve Yzerman led a spirited third-period rally at Chicago that enabled the Red Wings to wipe out a three-goal deficit.

Yzerman scored his 42nd goal 40 seconds into the last period. Then he set up Brad Marsh’s first goal in nearly two seasons at 7:12. Less than two minutes later, on a power play, he fed Sergei Federov for the tying goal.

Goalie Glen Hanlon, who gave up three goals on power plays, saved the tie for the Red Wings. First, he stopped Chris Chelios’ 40-foot blast, then he gloved a blast from the same spot a few seconds later.

Toronto 3, Buffalo 0--Jeff Reese stopped 28 shots at Buffalo for his first NHL shutout and Peter Zezel had a goal and an assist to lead the Maple Leafs to back-to-back victories.

Friday night Zezel had the winning goal in an upset of Edmonton at Toronto.

It was only the third victory in 12 decisions for Reese, the backup goalie.
