Not Flying: Pianists Maria Joao Pires and Ivo Pogorelich have both canceled scheduled Southern California appearances, this month and next. Pires is reportedly ill in Paris and unable to fulfill her contractual obligations with the Los Angeles Philharmonic tonight through Sunday in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The Portuguese pianist will be replaced by clarinetist Michele Zukovsky, who will play the Mozart Concerto at all performances. Pogorelich, scheduled for solo recitals March 1 in Palm Desert, March 6 and 7 at Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena and March 9 at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa, has canceled his entire United States tour. According to his management, the Yugoslav pianist will not play “any performances which involve international travel” for the rest of this season. In Costa Mesa, March 9, Pogorelich will be replaced by Santiago Rodriguez, silver medalist in the 1981 Van Cliburn International Competition.
