A 25-year-old Santa Barbara man whose body was found in 20 feet of water off the east end of Anacapa Island apparently plunged from a 150-foot cliff and drowned, the coroner’s office reported Saturday.

Kent White Sayre suffered head and body injuries from his fall but was alive when he hit the water, said Craig Stevens, Ventura County deputy coroner. The fall occurred sometime between Wednesday night and Friday afternoon, Stevens said, and Sayre drowned in the 58-degree water. Divers found the body Friday afternoon.

The coroner’s office had insufficient evidence to list the death as either a suicide or an accident, Stevens said.

Sayre disappeared from the island Wednesday evening, hours after arriving by commercial boat for a camping trip.

He is survived by two brothers in Santa Barbara and his parents, who live on the East Coast, Stevens said.
