189 Arrested in 9-Hour Anti-Gang Unit Sweep

Los Angeles police arrested 189 people, including 88 suspected gang members, on suspicion of a range of felony and misdemeanor charges during a nine-hour “Operation Hammer” anti-gang sweep of the San Fernando Valley on Friday night and early Saturday morning.

The 180-officer task force concentrated patrols in areas known for high levels of gang activity in Sylmar, North Hollywood and Van Nuys, Sgt. Ike Langsam said.

Of those arrested, 51 were suspected of felonies such as robbery, auto theft and narcotics related offenses. The rest are suspected of misdemeanors.

Nineteen juveniles were taken into custody on suspicion of felony offenses, and 31 were arrested on suspicion of misdemeanors, Langsam said.

Police impounded 30 cars and confiscated five handguns and 31 grams of illegal drugs, including cocaine and marijuana.
